A nurse aide is the person who is going to take the patient's vitals, chart the patient's input (food and water intake) and output (bathroom measurements and information), bathe and dress the patients who need assistance, help with oral care, keep the beds clean, help feed patients, turn bedridden patients, make sure patients always have water and that their call button is always within reach, help the patient with range of motion, keep lonely patients company, report any and all changes to the nurse, observe patients, report, document, and so much more.
The nurse aide is there to take a lot of the burden off the nurses so they can complete their very important tasks as well. The nurse aides and the nurses will exchange information about the patients at shift change to ensure that everyone is aware of any changes with regards to any of the patients. For example, if there is a patient who has turned competitive all of a sudden, then this would be discussed during shift change. Or, if a patient fell, this would be discussed so everyone knows to watch closely for signs of possible problems from the fall.
